Song of the Day

Every morning, before my eyes even open, the music begins. Not from the radio, not from an alarm on my phone or another external device. No, the music begins from the quiet place inside my head where songs are always waiting, music never ends. My entire life when I have opened my eyes to a new day, my day begins with its own soundtrack—today’s choice, handed to me like a gift.

Sometimes it makes me laugh: why this tune, why now? One day it’s “Send in the Clowns,” the next—a galloping “Charge of the Light Brigade,” or a lilting first movement from a Mozart sonata. Other mornings it’s something I’ve written myself, or a melody I don’t even recognize but feels familiar, as if I’ve carried it from a dream.

There’s always music, always a score running in the background of my thoughts—even when I’m standing in conversation, even when the day asks me to be practical or demands sober attention, whimsy or fun . It’s a lovely way to live. It is a lovely life with the music of my very own soundtrack accompanying me.
